How to Start Learning Songs by Ear

Songbook and acoustic guitar on a wooden floor

Learning by ear feels like magic until you realize it's a trainable skill. You don't need perfect pitch — you need a process and a little patience.

Start with the bass note

Most pop and rock songs move between a handful of chords. Find the lowest note of each chord change by humming along and matching it on your low strings. That single note usually tells you the chord's root.

Then guess major or minor

  • Sing the chord to yourself — does it feel bright or sad?
  • Bright and stable usually means major.
  • Darker or tense usually means minor.
  • Try both over the root note and trust your ear.

In lessons we build this muscle gradually so it becomes second nature. If you want a guide through it, our intermediate and advanced tracks make ear training a core part of the plan.
